Tracey Slater is a British contemporary artist. She was born in 1983 and works in her hometown of Derby, where she also has a studio.
After graduating with a “First With Honours” (awarded to students with good grades) in Illustration, she unfortunately fell ill and was unable to draw or paint for a few years. This had a huge impact on her practice.
“I have a feeling of freedom that I have never experienced before. The imperfect is at the heart of all my work. For me, it is pure joy and curiosity to play with different media and put my stamp and personality on the works".
Her works are mainly based on exploring drawings and paintings. She finds inspiration in old photos and uses them to create lines. She often wakes up and goes straight to her home studio, finds old pictures for inspiration and starts drawing or painting.
"I enjoy distorting and manipulating bodies and faces. I think the imperfect is beautiful. I think it feels more real and genuine. I can relate to them. Nothing is perfect, so why seek it? On the contrary, I embrace the imperfect "
“The process is a mixture of rush, pure joy and putting together a puzzle. I leave the lines what they want to be. I play, laugh, sometimes close my eyes to see what new and spontaneous forms I see”
Tracey's lines are raw and full of life. You can feel those playful strokes on canvas. Her art often has elements from her own personal life. It could, for example, be about her grandmother, an old carpet or wallpaper she remembers from her childhood.
