Harmen Van Der Tuin lives and works in Zwolle, the Netherlands.

Having worked with several styles for the past 15 years, Harmen has increasingly focused on the essential properties of shapes, surfaces, colors and fabric.

Van Der Tuin produces monochrome (visual arts term for a painting in a single color or in different tones of this) paintings on different backgrounds, on which brushstrokes become the subject of the artwork. He has removed all recognizable "subjects" in his work and in the process focused on the more sensual.

His paintings become a kind of sculpture, which is made on thick material and with large brushstrokes. His works are a combination between minimalism and abstract expressionism.

"The dissolving power of art is what really moves us. It is the revelation of the heart, which is unmanifest and is what we are.
Art needs innocence to reveal what is most important. So I work to be, but no being is what I use. "
— HARMEN VAN DER TUIN

The philosophy of Taoism and Buddhism has a great influence on his way of perceiving things.

Harmen refers to emptiness, while the works also originate from there. “This can only happen when the mind is still, when all is still there is no mind and only emptiness arises. Where consciousness is completely free and available to create", he says.
