Nanna Riis Andersen (b.1985) is a Danish artist based in Ringsted, Denmark. She graduated from the Jutland Art Academy in 2012 and has since participated in several exhibitions, both in Denmark and abroad.
The focal point of Riis Andersen's work is the body's internal structures, which she unfolds through drawing and painting. With inspiration in the human anatomy and the patterns of nature, she creates large, meticulous works that often appear as a form of mapping of the body's anatomical structure and network.
"I am concerned with mental and bodily intermediate stages, and constantly try to investigate the intermediate field, where something is in motion between two extremes. The dissolving energy is at the same time the unifying one, and it is this double force, where everything collapses to be resurrected, that I am fascinated by."
Among other things, Riis Andersen experiments with different types of liquid marker in combination with acrylic, colored pencil and pen, with a particular focus on the undertones and transparency of the colours. Riis Andersen works with each work in several stages. She paints over a long period of time and the many layers and overpaintings create a completely unique depth and wealth of detail in the pictures.
