Product description
Set of four original, hand-colored British botanical prints focusing on plants from the Umbelliferae / Apiaceae family. The prints originate from the work English Botany; or, Colored Figures of British Plants, 3rd edition, edited by John T. Boswell Syme and published in London in 1902. The illustrations are based on the classic originals by James Sowerby and JE Sowerby, which are still considered among the most precise and visually clear in British botanical art.
The motifs show Crithmum maritimum (sea marigold), Angelica sylvestris (wild angelica), Angelica archangelica (garden angelica) and Peucedanum officinale (pig fennel). Each plant is reproduced in full growth and accompanied by detailed studies of flowers, seeds and root structure. The subdued color palette of light green shades and soft yellow tones creates a calm and harmonious expression, making the set particularly suitable for kitchens, libraries, pharmacy-inspired rooms or classic country interiors.
Together, the prints form a coherent botanical narrative focusing on coastal and medicinal plants that have historically been used for preservation, natural medicine, and maritime life. Originally published as single sheets, they are here curated as a complete set with both decorative and scientific weight.
All four prints are in good antique condition. Light age-related patination and minor scattered stains occur, which is natural for the age. Margins are trimmed from the bound work. Clear prints with well-preserved hand coloring.
Suitable for hanging as a group. Works beautifully in light wood frames such as oak or walnut with off-white or cream-colored mounts. For a more contemporary look, slim black frames with generous mounts can highlight the fine details of the engravings.
