Extremely rare LaWo 1 armchair designed by Han Pieck in 1946 for LaWo Holland. This was the first Dutch chair made from a single piece of wood – a visionary design that marks an important chapter in Dutch design history.
Han Pieck, a student of Mart Stam, developed a special machine for production with support from the Marshall Plan and in collaboration with Philips. Only about 1300 chairs were produced, and this one with production number 86 is a particularly early example. It is estimated that fewer than 50 chairs still exist today.
The chair is made of molded plywood with oak veneer. It appears in good condition with a beautiful patina and normal signs of wear. Three small pieces of veneer have been carefully restored at the base of the legs, and the chair has been repainted.
LaWo 1 is today considered an iconic modernist design with great historical significance.
