Product description
Refined English landscape print from the early 1800th century with a view across the Thames Valley towards the town of Reading, seen from Holm Park. The composition is built up in calm, horizontal layers, where dense foliage in the foreground frames the meandering river, which leads the eye further towards open meadows, cultivated fields and a distant cityscape marked by church spires. The open sky and the soft tonal transitions create a subdued and contemplative atmosphere, characteristic of the Georgian picturesque tradition.
The motif was drawn by Thomas Hearne FSA, one of the most renowned British landscape artists of his time, known for his precise yet poetic depictions of the English countryside and historic sites. The copperplate engraving was done by William Byrne FSA, whose confident engraving technique translates Hearne's drawing into a harmonious print with clarity and depth.
The magazine was published in London on 1 January 1803 as part of the Britannia Depicta series, which was published between 1803 and 1817. The series was intended as a visual mapping of distinctive British landscapes during a period when antiquarian interest, national identity and landscape worship were closely intertwined. The work therefore functions both as a historical document and as a timeless landscape motif.
The subdued play of colors and airy composition make the print suitable for contemporary interiors. It would look particularly good in a library, study, hallway or living room, either alone or together with other English river landscapes and topographical prints from the period.
